Community Affairs – March

This month, the Community Affairs Committee is highlighting a few of the local animal support organizations that have various volunteer and donation opportunities that our SCVBR community can support.  Whether you are someone who loves spending time with animals or just wants to help our canine, feline and other friends in need, there is an opportunity for you to assist!

Second Chance Animal Shelter

1779 VT Route 7A, Arlington, VT – (802) 375-2898

We spoke to Troy at Second Chance who noted that despite some Covid restrictions still in place, they currently have volunteer opportunities available for Dog Walkers (on site), Socialization visits for both dogs and cats, and cleaning needs.  If there is an interest in doing a group volunteer outing, please contact the director.  In addition, Second Chance has a Donation Bin available for drop offs everyday from 8am to 4pm.   There is a Wishlist of items needed on their website.

Springfield Humane Society

401 Skitchewaug Trail, Springfield, VT – (802) 885-3997

Springfield Humane Society also has had to curb some of their volunteer programs due to Covid, but there are still some great opportunities.  Their Rent-A-Rover program offers volunteers an opportunity to take a dog out of the shelter for some socialization whether it be a hike, a sleep over, or even just a car ride.  They also have Dog Walking opportunities (on site).  There is a need for foster homes for cats that have recently had litters and are nursing the kittens.  Volunteer opportunities can be applied for on their website.  SHS also has a Food Shelf with drop offs accepted anytime.  There is a current need for dry cat food and litter, but all donations will be useful.

Lucy MacKenzie Humane Society

4832 Route 44, West Windsor, VT – (802) 484-5829

Lucy Mac has a number of open volunteer options – Foster a Pet, Dog Walking, Reception Desk, Kennel cleaning and Handi-man work. They are having a great fundraiser event coming in April – Cabin Fever Take-Out Dinner!  A to-go meal of homemade baked mac & cheese can be picked up at one of 3 different locations for a $15 donation. Meals must be ordered and paid for in advance – see their website for details.  Lucy Mac also has a Pet Pantry which is open to all. Contact them for details on making donations and about the other volunteer opportunities available.

SCVBR Non-Food Goods Collection Continues

In 2022 SCVBR Community Affairs Committee launched an initiative to collect items that are not covered by many of the area’s food assistance programs. Following is a list of items that are needed. If you would like to donate items, please drop them off at the TPW Mountain Realty and RE/MAX. Outdoor boxes are available for your items. Items delivered to these boxes will be distributed weekly to the local food banks. Items will also be collected at our next in-person membership meeting on April 4 at 9:00am!
